Is Pelvic Pain Affecting Your Ability to Mother?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Motherhood is one of the hardest jobs in the entire world.

It’s one of the most rewarding to many, but it can still be extremely hard.

It’s even harder when you don’t feel your best physically. Pelvic pain is no exception to this.

Your pelvis is the hub for all stability and movement within your daily activities. At any given moment, the muscles surrounding your pelvis have to simultaneously relax and contact in order to move in specific ways.

If you are experiencing pain in your pelvis and/or your pelvic floor, that is going to affect every movement you make throughout your day and it’s going to add an extra layer of challenges to mothering, Depending on how severe your pain is, it may make your to do list seem impossible.

In a normal 9-5 job, you can get accommodations if you having a difficult time completing the tasks required of you. With the job of motherhood, this is not an option. You are left to figure it out, to survive, to make it through the day because little people are counting on you, and frankly because you have no other option.

You endure the pain and try to find ways to still do the things you want and need to do. Sometimes your village of support, assuming you have a village of support, can help, but there are some times where only mama will suffice.

If you relate to this scenario, you are not alone. So many women are going through similar experiences. This can lead to burnout, overwhelm and feelings of guilt if you are not able to show up as your best self for your children.

There are however solutions you can try to decrease pelvic pain and gain back some of your life. If you are experiencing pelvic pain you can try:

  • Stretching and creating space in the pelvis

  • Working on breathing down toward pelvic floor on the inhale

  • Managing stress

  • Massage

  • Working with a pelvic floor therapist to provide an individualized plan for relief of symptoms
